Dedicated to the memory of Derek Hayes

This site is a tribute to Derek Hayes who sadly passed away on the 19th December 2019 after nearly 3 years suffering from dementia. Dad spent his last few years at the Whitehouse nursing home in Beccles and we are eternally grateful for the care and dedication of the staff during those difficult few years. Dad had reached a very respectable age of 88, he used to joke that if you lived longer than '3 score years and 10' you were doing well, well done Dad for blitzing that target! Married to Iris for 53 years before she sadly passed away in 2008, father to four children and a grandfather to Eliot, now 22 years old he will be very much missed and will forever be in our thoughts. A gardener, sun worshipper, music lover and keen photographer Dad worked as an engineer who followed an extremely successful and rewarding career doing something he loved, he moved up the ranks to a role of superintendent through hard work and dedication. He was very intelligent with a keen interest in politics and current events, he had something to say about everything, this resulted in some heated exchanges over the years but he was always there to deal with our dramas and upsets and offer advice and solutions. He really cared and he had a heart of gold. He also had a great sense of humour, something that was with him right to the end. Dad/Grandad we love you - you will always be in our thoughts and hearts. Thank you.

Dad used to love the poem 'I wandered Lonely as a Cloud' by William Wordsworth. Here are the words: I wandered lonely as a Cloud That floats on high o’er vales and Hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden Daffodils; Beside the Lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze. Continuous as the stars that shine And twinkle on the milky way, They stretched in never-ending line Along the margin of a bay: Ten thousand saw I at a glance, Tossing their heads in sprightly dance. The waves beside them danced; but they Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:- A Poet could not but be gay In such a jocund company: I gazed—and gazed—but little thought What wealth the show to me had brought: For oft when on my couch I lie In vacant or in pensive mood, They flash upon that inward eye Which is the bliss of solitude, And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the Daffodils.
